Subsidiarity
At St Mark’s, our curriculum is designed to form children as future leaders, guided by Gospel values, who will make a positive difference in society, care for the vulnerable, and act justly and compassionately. We believe that leadership is a vocation of service, rooted in the example of Christ, and that every child has the potential to contribute to the common good.
School Council
Our school council plays an active role in shaping school life. Pupils suggest and lead projects such as improving the playground or setting up new clubs, including a book club and a chess club. These experiences give children opportunities to practise solidarity, participation, and working for the common good. The school council have been instrumental in supporting the development of our reading for pleasure offer this academic year. They have helped to improve our book corners and are helping to organise the school pre-loved book sale. The school councillors are excellent role models and are brilliant advocate for their peers. Often, they selflessly give up their time to benefit the school community.
Chaplaincy Team
Our chaplaincy team supports pupils in developing these values, offering guidance and modelling service rooted in faith.
Safeguarding Champions
Our safeguarding champions are encouraged to notice those who may need help and to take practical action. One of their projects, setting up a worry box, reflects the CST principles of care for the vulnerable, the dignity of the human person, and preferential option for the poor, showing that small acts of service can have a profound impact. They are currently in the process of setting up a system which recognising the kind actions of others which they will be awarding weekly in assemblies, to highlight children demonstrating their faith in action.
Children also take part in the Junior Road Safety Scheme. This important role involves pupils taking the lead on teaching others how to stay healthy through active travel, and how to stay safe on our roads. Throughout the year they run a competitions, host assemblies and guide younger pupils on their understanding of the Green Cross Code during our annual Healthy Living Week. In addition to this they carry out a traffic monitoring project, to help develop the whole community’s understanding of how the traffic around our schools impacts not only safety, but our environment.
Our play leaders take on a pivotal leadership within our school to enhance the lunchtime provision of our younger pupils. By empowering our play leaders to take the responsibility of organising and leading playground activities they are developing key leadership skills which can be applied to other areas of their lives. In turn this helps to growth their confidence and sense of duty.
