We are stewards of the Earth

At St Mark’s Catholic Primary School, children learn about nature and the importance of caring for our environment in a structured and sequential way. This is part of our Journey of Faith Curriculum, which ensures that each class learns about a different aspect of God’s Creation, building knowledge and skills year by year, and culminating in a final project in Year 6 that integrates learning from across the curriculum.

Our approach to stewardship is deeply rooted in Catholic teaching, particularly Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, which calls us to care for “our common home” and all living creatures. It also reflects the wider principles of CST, especially the call to care for Creation, serve others, and act with justice and compassion. Through hands-on activities, Forest School sessions, educational visits, and opportunities for reflection, children come to understand that caring for the Earth is an essential part of their faith journey and their responsibility as stewards of God’s Creation. The CST principles we focus on include:

  • Care for Creation – valuing and protecting the natural world.
  • Solidarity – working together for the common good.
  • Preferential Option for the Poor – supporting those in need through action and service.
  • Dignity of the Human Person – respecting all life as sacred.
  • Participation – empowering children to take responsibility and have a voice
